My vessels exist on the border (and crossing it) between functional ceramics, for use in food presentation, and sculptures. I am interested in this duality, this middle ground, because of which the vessel includes both the obvious usefulness as well as symbolic content. One example are the stoneware jars pictured below, which are able to hold content, but it is ambiguous what that content would be. The useful aspect of the vessels is however still fully present in this case but the emphasis is on the use of materials, the process of making and firing and the space between them when exhibited creating a special atmosphere.
My individual ceramic works, as is true for all my opuses, are entities that are grouped into larger numbers. The numbers have symbolic and aesthetic meanings. I am always interested in the relationship between the individual vessels within the group, as much as in couples of vessels and in the work as a whole.
